In recent years we have seen an encouraging increase in funding initiatives for emerging fashion designers.

The Fund was launched by BFC Chairman Harold Tillman in September 2008 and provides one British based designer with £200,000 and a year-long mentoring program - additional awards of mentoring and business support may be allocated to finalists at the judging panel’s discretion.
The aim of The Fund is to assist talented British designers with the potential for commercial growth to start making the transition from a developing creative business to a global fashion brand.




To be eligible the following criteria must be met :
- Your company should be UK based

- Designers who produce fashion shows must show at London Fashion Week

- Designers who do not produce a fashion show should have headquarters and sales in the UK

- You must demonstrate that you have achieved UK and international distribution within high quality

- You must demonstrate that you have access to quality production

- You should be an established designer business which with additional resource and specialised
 support can achieve real growth

- The collection should consist of womenswear or menswear or accessories and not consist
exclusively or predominantly of bridal wear or children’s wear

-  Design duos are permitted to enter
-  No samples should be submitted unless requested

-  Designers may not apply more than 4 times

-  Winners of the BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund are not eligible to reapply



The fund was launched in September 2013 and is supported by Vertu and provides one British based designer with £200,000 and access to high level business mentoring and professional business services.
The Fund is aimed at businesses that have been trading for a minimum of three years, with UK and international stockists and who have graduated through the existing BFC talent support schemes or are at a similar stage in their business.
Entry terms are similar those of BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund except for
- Designers who produce fashion shows must show and sell at London Collections: Men
- The collection should consist of menswear or menswear accessories

In 1993 the British Fashion Council created New Generation (NEWGEN), one of the world’s most internationally recognised talent identification schemes. Newgen offers catwalk designers financial support towards their show costs and the opportunity to use the BFC Catwalk Show Space. Others receive sponsored presentation or exhibition space to showcase their collections, offering an important introduction for young UK-based designers to influential press and buyers from around the world. NEWGEN also provides business and mentoring support through the BFC in partnership with Shoosmiths, Baker Tilley and Lloyds TSB.

To be eligible the following criteria must be met :

- Applicants should be based in the United Kingdom.
- Applicants should have a business and would normally be expected to have shown off schedule.
- Applicants should have been in business for no longer than 3 years.
- Applicants must have a minimum of two stockists. International sales are not required.
- The collection should consist of womenswear or accessories and not consist of menswear or bridal wear.

NEWGEN MEN began in September 2009, building on TOPMAN and Fashion East’s successful MAN initiative. It has since become instrumental in raising the profile of emerging British designers using London Collections: Men as a showcasing platform

The British Fashion Council organise 11 different funding initiatives in total, the others are:

ESTETHICA : founded to showcase the growing movement of cutting edge designers committed to working eco sustainably.

ROCK VAULT : a jewellery initiative to support, showcase and promote Britain’s most innovative, fine jewellery talent.Selected designers are awarded a space to create their own unique installation within the dedicated Rock Vault area at the Designer Showrooms during London Fashion Week. They also receive business support mentoring.

HEADONISM : is the only designer showcasing platform for emerging milliners and an essential initiative to support emerging millinery talent celebrating the new wave of emerging London milliners. It showcases emerging London milliners within an installation at London Fashion Week.

FASHION FORWARD & FASHION FORWARD MEN : provides support to UK based designers who have already established a profile at London Fashion Week through the NEWGEN or NEWGEN MEN  programme, or who are at an equivalent stage in their business. The primary aim is to enable designers to show their collections at London Fashion Week and develop their businesses through access to a range of advisors.

FASHION TRUST : was founded in February 2011 to create a global mentoring programme to support the growth of British fashion designer businesses into global fashion brands.

FASHION FILM : aims to develop relationships between fashion designers and film makers and recognises the on-going development of fashion film as an important medium in the industry.

Launched in November 2013, the LVMH Prize each year chooses one young designer and three graduates of fashion schools.

The winning designer will receive a grant of €300,000 and personalised technical and financial support from the Group for a 12-month period following the LVMH Prize award. This support covers all the areas of expertise that are critical to a young fashion brand – intellectual property, sourcing, production and distribution, image and advertising, marketing, etc..
The three “Graduates” prize winners will each receive a €10,000 grant and an opportunity to work as part of the design team at an LVMH brand for one year.
The “Graduates” prize is open to students of fashion schools who are completing a degree course at a fashion school during the LVMH Prize year.
The LVMH Prize is open to designers under 40 years old who have presented and sold at least two women’s or men’s ready-to-wear collections.

ITS award was launched in 2002 by EVE and partners such as Renzo Rossi of Diesel. It was created to offer visibility, support and a voice to young talents worldwide. It gives young designers the chance to set their creativity free through financial opportunities, work placements and the chance to have their work shown to a jury made up of real experts.  The evaluation criteria are: creativity, innovation, feasibility. This year’s contest enrolment phase has just ended. Over 1200 projects were enroled from about 80 countries

The competitions are open to:
- College students in their final year of a Fashion Design course (BA or MA),
- recent Fashion Design graduates,
- young talents who work as Fashion Designers.
ITS consists of 4 competition fields:

The core of International Talent support, ITS Fashion, was developed for final year students of fashion design schools and young designers. The bridge between schools and the fashion industry year after year, giving students and designers exposure, internships and work opportunities.

To enter designers must prepare a portfolio that contains:

- sketches (both artistic and technical sketches) of a collection of 5-8 outfits,
- a concept,
- photos of your past or current work,
- a CV


ITS Fashion Awards Fashion Collection of the Year  The winner returns the year following the award to present a new collection and be part of the Fashion Jury. EVE will cover their expenses and handle the production and organisation of the presentation, giving the winner €15,000 towards the development of the new collection.


The Diesel Award aims to support fashion student’s to breakthrough into the international fashion scene. The Award consists of a cash prize of €25,000 that the winner can use to promote their work and to invest in their career. This project was conceived by Diesel for this year’s candidates. There will also be an internship offered within the Diesel Creative Team at its Italian headquarters to gain the experience of working in an innovative fashion company.

The Vogue Talents Award winner will receive publication on the Vogue Talents website with a photo shoot & interview,  plus a feature in the September supplement to Vogue Italia.

Eyes on Talents Award The winner could be selected from amongst the ITS Fashion finalists, receive €3,000 and a featured profile communication to all Eyes on Talents member brands.

2 : ITS ACCESSORIES  Developed as an extension of ITS Fashion that focuses on the accessories field. The award is open to accessories design graduates and young accessories designers.The winner of Accessories Collection of the Year will be awarded €5,000 towards the creation of a new accessories collection of at least 5 pieces which will be presented to the press and public at the next edition. The winner will also be offered the chance by Modamont to run an exhibition of his/her creations at the next show in September 2014 and featured in the press release and website.
You must prepare a portfolio that contains:
- sketches (both artistic and technical sketches) of a collection of at least 5 pieces,
- one proposal for the YKK AWARD,
- a concept,
- photos of your past or current work
- a CV,
- your registration form (you’ll need to pre-register online first and send the form to us with your portfolio)

3 : ITS JEWELLERY : An international contest started in 2011 and exclusively dedicated to contemporary jewellery in all of its diverse forms, intended for all jewellery students and young jewellery designers in the world. Swarovski is the main partner of ITS JEWELLERY, providing all jewellery finalists with Swarovski crystals for their collections. Finalists will compete for the SWAROVSKI Jewellery Award: €10,000 + a 6-month internship.

4 : ITS ARTWORK :  This new competition field is based on the development of concepts. The project is dedicated to designers of ITS FASHION, ITS ACCESSORIES and ITS JEWELLERY. Swatch is the main partner for this award.
The winner of the SWATCH Award will receive €10,000 + a remunerated internship in the Swatch Creative Lab.
ITS will next take place on 11-12 July 2014 in Trieste, Italy.

The fund is an annual grant and business development program supporting emerging designers and fostering their talent with funding and professional memberships. Founded in 1962 by publicist Eleanor Lambert, the CFDA annual awards recognise outstanding contributions made to American fashion by individuals from all areas of the industry and related arts, with awards being given for design excellence in womenswear, menswear, and accessories as well as extraordinary accomplishments in journalism, creative vision, and lifetime achievement.

Awards Include:

The CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Selection Committee selects three emerging fashion designers, who receive:
-  Business mentoring from an established team of fashion industry professionals in areas such as business planning, marketing, sourcing, production, exporting, etc.
- To encourage and enable the recipients to pursue his/her own independent design plan (one winner at $300,000 and two runners-up at $100,000 each).
To apply designers must meet the following criteria:
- Be a designer of demonstrable talent- i.e. have garnered substantial and recent editorial
coverage, and have support (orders) from top retailers;
- Primary design business based in the United States;
- A minimum of two years in business;
- Have professional staff, paid or volunteer, which can devote the time and effort required to
accomplish the stated aims of an applicant’s design career plans;
- Request and submit a Preliminary Application, accompanied by a 350-word biographical
statement, which should include a summary of the applicant’s design career.

International Catwalk Competition 2014

Graduate Fashion Week have partnered with Vogue Italia Talents and Fashion Scout to present the International Catwalk Competition 2014.

Fashion universities worldwide are invited to enter a collection from their chosen graduate. The selected universities may enter only one graduate collection each in the competition from BA courses. The competition will be judged by by Sara Maino, Senior Fashion Editor from Vogue Italia and includes other industry experts including Prof. Wendy Dagworthy (RCA).
The prize for the winning collection is £1,000 for the graduate and £500 for the university and the collection will be exhibited at Fashion Scout during London Fashion Week September 2014.
The Catwalk Show and Judging will take place at Graduate Fashion Week on Tuesday 3rd June 2014.

Red Vatican

Red Vatican is a London-based, concept fashion brand, with a signature design aesthetic, progressive approach and ethical core. Dedicated to supporting the best up-and-coming fashion designers to showcase their ideas and develop their designs, Red Vatican pick the most exciting designers they find to create limited edition mens and womenswear collections that celebrate originality, individuality and creativity. With the opportunity to receive a bursary, press coverage, technical guidance and support in launching your own label after a season at Red Vatican, it’s a great opportunity for any emerging designer.

Designers will produce a new collection for one season based on a set theme or concept and are given creative freedom to do so with guidance to ensure the collections work together and a support from the fully equipped Red Vatican London studio. Designers will receive
- a bursary,
- press coverage and support through the RV partner marketing campaigns,
- a master class from a leading fashion designer / fashion entrepreneur
- support with the production of their first commercial collection under their own fashion label
- upon finishing the season designing for RV designers will be given the opportunity of working out of the studios for a second season / first year of setting up their own label including free use of RV’s photo studio to create cookbooks and deals with London based Manufacturers and Distributers.

NYC Fashion Production Fund
The NYC Fashion Production Fund (NYCFPF) was organised to support emerging designers based and manufacturing in New York City with financing and will provide NYC-based emerging designers with purchase order financing at below-market rates and with more flexible terms than those of traditional lenders. Acceptance into the Fund affords designers many benefits including access to a loan that has a simple and straightforward fee structure, ability to work with existing and additional lenders and/or factors, and access to mentoring, technical advisors, and networking opportunities with industry experts.

The NYC Fashion Production Fund will offer
- loans and advances against approved customer purchase orders.
- loans (ranging from $50,000 – $300,000) to cover costs of raw materials and production.
- loans for time periods between 30-120 days, depending on individual designers’ production
- Require the loans to be repaid upon shipment of the goods to the customer and assignment of
the receivables to the designer’s lender or factor.
- Require payment of a 9.5% per annum interest (0.79% per month) on the total cost of production.
- Require monthly payment of a 0.33% servicing and monitoring fee.
To be eligible, designers must :
- Be based in and doing business in New York City.
- Manufacture goods in New York City.
- Provide detailed documentation of all approved customer and vendor purchase orders.
- Demonstrate a source of repayment to the NYCFPF upon shipment of finished inventory to the

A.N.D.A.M. (National Association for the Development of the Fashion Arts) aims to, in the words of its president M. Pierre Bergé, “…identify emerging talents in contemporary fashion design and offer them through its award, the means to product a runway show during Paris Fashion Week, and to establish and develop their label in France over time, thus perpetuating the dynamism of the Parisian fashion scene.”

The award offers 250,000€ for the grand prize and 75,000€ for the First Collection Prize.
To be eligible for the Grand Prix designers must
- not have won neither of the two ANDAM grants in 2012 or 2013 nor any other prize with a
financial endowment in 2013
- have a minimum of three commercial seasons internationally distributed.
- have generated a turnover between €300.000 and € 3 million worldwide in 2013
- own a French company or, if based outside of France, be prepared to set up a French company     during the same year as the receipt of the fellowship.
- Not sign any exclusivity with any international retailers (department & online boutique) for his/her   FW14/15 collection.
To be eligible for the First Collection Prize Designers must
- be under 40 (forty) years of age as of January, 1st, 2014- own a French company
- have generated a turnover between €300.000 and € 3 million worldwide in 2013
- not have won neither of the two ANDAM grants in 2012 or 2013 nor any other prize with a
financial endowment in 2013- have commercially marketed at least one season
- not have generated a turnover of more than € 500,000 worldwide in 2013
- If they are the 2013 First Collection Prize’s winner, organise an event to present their Spring-Summer 14/15 & Fall-Winter 2015 in “La Suite” exclusive space, supplied by LesGaleriesLafayette.
