NEWGEN MEN AT LC:M 2015

London Collections: Men in collaboration with the British Fashion Council and Topman come together each season to reward emerging designers in menswear for their achievements under the banner of NEWGEN MEN; a support initiative that aims to showcase their collections at LC: M.
The NEWGEN MEN initiative was launched in September 2009, building on TOPMAN and Fashion East’s successful MAN initiative. It has since become instrumental in raising the profile of emerging British designers using London Collections: Men as a showcasing platform. NEWGEN MEN offers sponsorship, tailored business and mentoring support. It provides the opportunity to increase commercial business success and build relationships with key press and buyers from around the world. NEWGEN MEN remains a highly prestigious launchpad promoting the best of British menswear talent with dedicated support from TOPMAN.

Last year 10 UK based designers were selected for the NEWGEN MENS initiative.
Here’s a look at what the designers presented for their Autumn/Winter 2015 collections at LC:M 2015

 

KIT NEALE

“It’s a really fun time for men’s fashion,”

The London born designer Christopher (Kit) Neale started working in fashion at age 16 as a stylist assisting renowned fashion editors in London and New York. He went on to work with the incredible, avant-garde designer Gareth Pugh as well as Duckie Brown, Tom Scott, within the print department of the National Theatre and for Wonderland, where he worked for two years before embarking on a degree in Fashion Design. Upon graduating Kit Neale set up his business in 2011. The small team based in London work on the KIT NEALE brand which Kit runs with his business partner, Caspar Hodgson.

ASTRID ANDERSEN

“I’m drawn to things that appear both very hard and sensitive at the same time.”

Astrid Andersen is Danish born and trained at The Royal College of Art in London where after graduating in 2010, she went on the win the Brioni Creativity and Innovation Award and the River Island MA Student Bursary Award.

AGI & SAM

“We wanted to look at how children see clothes, and how they possibly could change our perceptions of why clothes are made the way they are.”

Agi Mdumulla and Sam Cotton met whilst working at Alexander McQueen and later founded their label in January 2010.
Agape Mdumulla was born in Tanzania and brought up in North Yorkshire. After graduating in Fashion Design from Manchester School of Art he presented his first collection at London Graduate Fashion Week in July 2008 and again at Iceland Fashion Week in 2009.
Sam Cotton was born in Stratford-upon-Avon and studied Illustration. He has worked as a Fashion Illustrator and Print Designer at Karl Lagerfeld, Alexander McQueen, Armand Basi, Carolyn Massey, Blaak Homme and J.W. Anderson.
The duo have benefitted from the CFE Venture Program which, over two years, allowed them to have studio funding, PR and legal advice and mentoring from Paul Smith whom they met with each season to discuss the best way of moving the brand forwards.

ALEX MULLINS

“What would a modern day cowboy wear if he was in London? How would he adapt?”

Alex Mullins presented his debut collection at LC: M as part of the British Fashion Council’s NEWGEN ‘Ones to Watch’ initiative.
The young designer graduated from Fashion Design at Central Saint Martins, where he was runner up in the L’Oreal Professional Young Designer of the Year Award. He then went on to complete the MA (Menswear) at the Royal College of Art. While at the RCA he was awarded a full scholarship with Kopenhagen Fur, and was nominated for the Dazed and Confused/Casio G-Shock ‘Spirit of Toughness’ award. After working for Alexander McQueen, Diane von Furstenberg, Jeremy Scott, Kanye West and Dirk Bikkembergs, Mullins set up his brand in spring 2013.

CMMN SWDN

“Menswear today is much more free with color—it’s even loud at times, which is great.”

CMMN was launched in 2012 in Malmö, Sweden by Saif Bakir and Emma Hedlund. The designers first met in 2004 in London while studying Fashion Design at Central Saint Martins and London College of Fashion.
They both have gained their experience from the fashion industry, having worked at a series of renowned fashion houses such as Wooyoungmi, COS and most recently for Kanye West in Paris where together they worked as Head of Design. Setting up Kanye’s studio in Paris triggered their desire to start their own label.

CRAIG GREEN

“It is an incredible honor to be part of Newgen Men, The support is an incredibly valuable tool in allowing me to progress my business, for which I am very grateful.”

Craig Green is a London native and graduated with an MA from a full scholarship at Central Saint Martins in March 2012. His Masters collection was nominated for the Design Museum’s ‘Design of the Year 2013’ award alongside Fashion’s finest such as Louis Vuitton, Prada and Comme des Garcons.

DIEGO VANASSIBARA

“I make my shoes in a family run factory in Tuscany, Italy. There are many features that set them way apart from other shoes in the market. The most eye catching one, and the most precious, is the hand carved wooden accents.”

Diego Vanassibara presented his most accomplished collection yet; a mens footwear collection featuring rich colours and an Illustrious mix of textures. The young designer studied at the legendary English shoemaking institute, London’s Cordwainer’s College for Footwear.
Prior to which he gained his awareness for harmony and proportion as an architecture student. He decided to pursue a career where he could
balance both the structural and engineering sides of architecture, with the dynamism and free creativity of fashion and found his calling in high quality Footwear design.

LEE ROACH

Lee Roach is an English born designer based in London. The LEE ROACH brand was established following his graduation from Central Saint Martins in 2010, having worked with Meadham Kirchhoff, Kilgour on Savile Row and Peter Saville.
The brand creates an aesthetic that combines traditional distinctive menswear elements with a new refined minimalism.
Lee’s spring/summer 2011 collection featured in Selfridges ‘Bright Young Things’ initiative.

NASIR MAZHAR

“Taking you from hazy-eyed lazing, all the way to strobe-fuelled euphoria, the idea of a uniform, 24/7 pride in appearance is presented.”

Nasir took part time hat making courses with Jane Smith and has previously worked for Mark Wheeler.

VIDUR

“There are so many sources of inspiration that come together to create the finished article.”

Richard Brand and Raj Mistry are the designers behind Vidur. The word ‘Vidur’ comes from the Icelandic noun for wood they chose it for it’s symbol of strength as the name for their clothing brand, with the philosophy that its garments would be elemental, functional and enduring. Raj studied at the Royal College of Art, while Richard studied at the Edinburgh College of Art.





 

As well as the opportunity to showcase their collections, the NEWGEN MEN initiative assists designers with financial support and a business mentorship. The support is aimed at building the designers’ businesses commercially and help them develop relationships with key press and buyers, ensuring they have more opportunities going forward. The initiative was established in 2009, and built on the success of Topman and Fashion East’s MAN initiative, and has supported menswear talent along the way including Christopher Shannon, J.W. Anderson, James Long and Sibling.
